Orleans was named in honor of Louise Philippe II, Duke of Orleans in recognition of France's support for the 13 cononies during the Americah Revolution. Early history, like most of the CApe, revolved around fishing, whaling and agriculture. Creation of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961 helped build the town's tourism industry.
